Abstract

The present work, investigates the impact of overcrowding in classes on the academic success of students in the 4th to 6th classes at Escola Primária de Terrene, located in the city of Nampula. The main objective of the study is to analyze how overcrowding affects the academic success of these students. Specifically, the study aims to: identify the challenges faced in managing classes due to overcrowding; describe the strategies adopted by school professionals to manage large classes; and analyze how overcrowding influences students’ academic achievement. Furthermore, the work suggests actions and strategies to improve equity and quality of teaching at the institution. To answer the study questions, a qualitative methodology was adopted, which included a bibliographic review, interviews with teachers and school managers, and fieldwork with visits to the Terrene Primary School, where the phenomenon of overcrowding was observed. The results indicate that classes with a high number of students present greater heterogeneity and unequal levels of aptitude, which makes the teaching process more complex, especially in the planning and pedagogical intervention stages. This scenario conditions the role of the teacher and can compromise the quality of teaching, since the lack of time and opportunities limits individualized support to students.
