This research analyzed the degree of similarity and mutual intelligibility between Cinyungwe, Cinyanja, and Cisena in the urban context of Tete City. The study arised from the need to understand whether the proximity between these Bantu languages is merely superficial or based on a deep structural homogeneity that facilitates interdialectal communication. To this end, the study established the following specific objectives: i) to identify the common features among the languages involved in the study (Cinyungwe, Cinyanja, and Cisena); ii) to describe the distinctive properties between Cinyungwe, Cinyanja, and Cisena; and iii) to explain the convergent contexts that determine the linguistic intelligibility or homogeneity among Cinyungwe, Cinyanja, and Cisena. Under the theoretical framework of Variationist Sociolinguistics and Synchrony, a mixed-methodology was adopted, combining quantitative analysis of lexical items with qualitative analysis of surveys and elicited production tests applied to a sample of 30 informants including youth, adults, and the elderly. The results demonstrate high morphosyntactic similarity (above 80%), although lexical intelligibility is asymmetrical and influenced by the prestige of Cinyungwe in the region. The study concludes that a process of koineization is underway in Tete City, characterized by the emergence of a hybrid urban norm that merges local variants and integrates Portuguese loanwords, ensuring linguistic vitality through accommodation and functional hybridism.
