Iṣẹ́ ìwádìí yìí ṣe àgbéyẹ̀wò ipa obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni nínú àwọn àṣàyàn ìwé eré-onítàn Yorùbá. Ó ṣe àfàyọ ipa tí àwọn obìnrin kó àti ipò tí wọ́n wà, èyí tí ó fi wọ́n hàn gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni bí ó ṣe jẹ yọ nínú àwọn ìwé eré-onítàn tí a ṣà yàn fún iṣẹ́ yìí. Èrèdí ṣiṣe èyí láti ṣe àgbéyẹ̀wò irúfẹ́ àwọn ipò tí ó jẹ́ ipò akọni tí àwọn òǹkọ̀wé eré-onítàn Yorùbá to àwọn ẹ̀dá-ìtàn tí wọ́n jẹ́ obìnrin sí nínú àwọn àṣàyàn iṣẹ́ wọn. Àwọn ìwé eré-onítàn tí iṣẹ́ yìí ṣe àmúlò jẹ́ mẹ́fà, àwọn ìwé eré-onítàn náà sì ni Mọrèmi, Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà, Olú Ọmọ, Baṣọ̀run Gáà, àti Orí Mẹ̀kúnnù. Ìtupalẹ̀ iṣẹ́ yìí gbára lé ìlànà tíọ́rì ìṣẹ̀tọ́fábo. Iṣẹ́ yìí jẹ́ kí ó hàn pé àwọn òǹkọ̀wé eré-onítàn Yorùbá gbé àwọn obìnrin kalẹ̀ gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni láàrin àwùjọ nínú aáyan ogun jíjà àti ètò ìṣèlú àwùjọ, èyí jẹ yọ nínú ipa tí àwọn òǹkọ̀wé jẹ́ kí àwọn ẹ̀dá-ìtàn tí wọ́n jẹ́ obìnrin kó nínú àwọn ìwé eré-onítàn náà. Àwọn kókó-ọ̀rọ̀ tí ó fojú hàn nípa obìnrin ní ipò akọni ni obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni jagunjagun, obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni olóògùn, obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni ajìjàgbara, obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni-dòrìṣà àti obìnrin gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni nípa ìlò agbára ẹ̀mí àìrí. Iṣẹ́ yìí fi ìdí rẹ̀ múlẹ̀ pé fífi àwọn obìnrin hàn gẹ́gẹ́ bí akọni nínú àwọn ìwé eré-onítàn Yorùbá jẹ́ ọnà láti fa ògo ìjobìnrin yọ, ó sì jẹ́ àfihàn àwòràn bí àwọn obinrin ṣe rí gan-an nínú àwùjọ Yorùbá.

This study examines women’s roles as heroines in selected Yorùbá plays. It identified the women roles and their postions as potray in the selected plays for this study with a view to examining the various heronic positions that the Yorùbá playwrights give to female characters in their works. The study examines six Yorùbá plays, which are: Mọrèmi, Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà, Olú Ọmọ, Baṣọ̀run Gáà and Orí Mẹ̀kúnnù and it employed the theory of womanism for the analysis. Findings of the study revealed that Yorùbá playwrights potray women as heroines in war organisation and social politics, as it is evident in the roles that women play in the selected Yorùbá plays. The themes identified were women as heroine in war fighting, charm casting, activism, legendary and the use of spiritual power. This study affirms that potraying women as heroines in Yorùbá plays exhumes women glory and depicts their true picture in Yorùbá society.

Edinrin Olúwatóyìn BỌ́LÁRÌNWÁ, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo

is a Chief Lecturer at the Department of Yorùbá, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Oyo state Nigeria. She has her B.A in Yorùbá from University of Ilorin, M.A. and Ph.D. in Yorùbá Literature from University of Ibadan Olabisi Onabanjo University respectively. Her research and teaching focus majorly on Yorùbá Literature and Culture.
