Winela emwali: analysis of the values transmitted to girls in initiation rites and their relationship with tolerance of domestic violence

Abstract

Initiation rites constitute an institution for establishing social relationships in traditional societies, particularly in the north of the country. In Mozambique, female initiation rites are seen by some as the main cause of early marriages, teenage pregnancies and school dropout rates. Are female initiation rites also responsible for tolerating domestic violence? This research aims to understand the influence of initiation rites on the practice of domestic violence and its tolerance. The study was based on the problem that domestic violence against women on the Island of Mozambique involves young people aged 18 to 25 who have undergone initiation rites. The research adopted a qualitative methodology, through interviews aimed at religious, traditional and state leaders. The study found that the largest number of victims of domestic violence are between 18 and 25 years old, and, despite the efforts of state and community authorities to publicize Law No. 29/2009, the cases are not mostly reported to PRM or any other authority due to various factors, especially religious ones. The study concluded that tolerance to domestic violence against women on the Island of Mozambique is influenced by values ​​transmitted to girls in initiation rites and by religious factors, as these values ​​make women peaceful towards these acts of violence.
