In formal teaching, assessment, and learning environments, understanding students' representations, difficulties, and motivational and demotivating factors regarding the practice of writing in Portuguese language classes is challenging and important. It allows the researcher/teacher to understand the real difficulties students face in writing and, therefore, to develop a set of activities that help mitigate the identified problems. This research aims to understand the representations of 12th and 13th grade students regarding the practice of writing in Portuguese language classes. This is a qualitative study. To achieve this, we administered a questionnaire with eight open-ended questions. After analyzing the responses, we processed them qualitatively, taking into account the theoretical framework on writing presented in this study. The information contained in the survey questionnaires underwent pre-analysis, material exploration, processing of results, inference, and interpretation. The responses revealed that, although students recognize the importance of writing for academic development and daily life, they still face significant challenges, such as difficulty organizing ideas, limited vocabulary, and uncertainty regarding grammatical and spelling rules.
