Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of control measures in combating illegal hunting in Mágoè National Park, employing a concomitant qualitative and quantitative research method. The central purpose of the research is to examine managers' views on the instruments used to combat illegal hunting and evaluate the effectiveness of these actions. The study is classified as exploratory, enabling a deeper understanding of the problem and the formulation of assumptions about the mechanisms used to monitor natural resources. Data collection occurred in two stages: a bibliographical review, which provided theoretical support for the study, and field research, which involved systematic observation and informal dialogues with four park managers, allowing for a thorough analysis. Microsoft Excel 2010 was used to process and analyse the data, simplifying graphing and descriptive statistical analysis. The results reveal that the main monitoring mechanisms involve the constant presence of environmental protection agents, cooperation with Non-Governmental Organizations and the active participation of local communities in safeguarding biodiversity. However, the study also points out obstacles that hinder the effectiveness of these actions, such as lack of funds, corruption, lack of appropriate training for agents and conflicts between traditional community practices and conservation standards. It is concluded that, despite considerable efforts to combat illegal hunting in Mágoè National Park, it is crucial to intensify collaboration between authorities and communities, ensuring appropriate funding and continuous training of those involved. And, it is suggested that emphasis be placed on the implementation of integrated and sustainable strategic planning for the conservation of the region's biodiversity that considers local social and economic dynamics
