Traditional agricultural systems in central Mozambique: experiences of the Mussapa community

Abstract

In the central region of Mozambique, traditional agricultural systems play a vital role in the livelihoods of local communities, as well as in biodiversity preservation and adaptation to ever-changing climate conditions. The Mussapa community, in this context, stands out as a relevant example of ancestral agricultural experiences that have proven resilient over time. Preserving and passing on knowledge about traditional farming techniques is crucial for the survival of rural communities in Mozambique. This article aimed to assess traditional agricultural production experiences in the Mussapa Community, seeking to understand the traditional agricultural practices adopted by the Mussapa Community, investigate the use of traditional knowledge and experiences passed down through generations in the community’s agricultural production, and analyze the challenges faced by the community in maintaining and transmitting traditional agricultural experiences. To achieve the outlined objectives, field research was conducted in the Mussapa Community, using qualitative approaches such as semi-structured interviews and participant observations. The sample included 83 local traditional farmers who shared their knowledge and experiences regarding agricultural practices. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance of recognizing the interdependence between traditional knowledge, challenges faced, and proposed solutions in preserving traditional agricultural experiences. The Mussapa Community illustrates that the past and present are intertwined, and by embracing challenges with collaborative solutions, it is possible to ensure the continuity of traditional agricultural experiences for future generations.
