Juventude e vulnerabilidade ambiental no “Bairro Novo” de Quelimane: entre a exposição ao risco e a capacidade adaptativa
Youth and environmental vulnerability in 'Bairro Novo', Quelimane: from risk exposure to adaptive capacity
Keywords:
Juventude, Informalidade urbana, vulnerabilidade ambiental, QuelimaneAbstract
This article examines the living conditions of young residents in Bairro Novo, a peri-urban settlement in Quelimane marked by urban informality and exposure to severe socio-environmental risks. Based on qualitative research (2023-2024), through semi-structured interviews and direct observation, the study explores how young people experience and respond to environmental vulnerability — floods, cyclones, and mangrove degradation — within a context of structural precarity and state absence. Mobilizing the concepts of socio-environmental vulnerability, adaptive capacity, and urban informality, the article argues that the youth of Bairro Novo are not merely passive victims, but also actors who develop creative and functional survival strategies. This dual condition constitutes the core of the text's theoretical contribution, proposing an integrated reading of informal urbanisation, climate risk, and youth survival economies in African urban contexts.
