This article addresses the issue of improper solid waste disposal at the Chongoene market, located in Gaza Province, Mozambique in 2025. There is an increasing and disorganized accumulation of waste in public areas and within the market, posing serious risks to public health, urban hygiene, and local environmental balance. The main problem lies in the absence of an effective solid waste management system and the low awareness among stakeholders, including merchants, residents, and local authorities. The hypothesis is that the lack of environmental education, combined with insufficient infrastructure, significantly contributes to the worsening pollution and negative impacts in the area. The primary objective of this study was to assess the environmental and public health impacts resulting from poor solid waste management at the Chongoene market, as well as to propose sustainable alternatives for proper waste handling. The methodology was qualitative, based on field observations, semi-structured interviews with merchants and local residents, analysis of waste composition, and a literature review on Environmental Chemistry and waste management principles. The study analyzed organic waste degradation processes, pollutant gas emissions, disease vector presence, and contamination of soil and water resources by toxic substances. The results show that the current situation compromises the populations quality of life and demands immediate interventions to prevent further environmental damage and health risks. It is concluded that implementing educational strategies focused on environmental awareness, recycling programs, installation of proper waste containers, and encouragement of composting are viable and necessary measures to mitigate negative impacts. Promoting integrated and sustainable solid waste management is therefore essential to ensure a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable environment in the Chongoene market and similar contexts.ABRELPE Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Limpeza Pública e Resíduos Especiais.
