Until the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Ovimbundu kingdoms of the Central Plateau of Angola enjoyed political sovereignty and responded firmly to Portuguese pretensions that aimed to expand and effectively occupy the region. Based on an essentially descriptive methodology, the article deals with the military struggles carried out by the Ovimbundu (Angola's largest sociocultural group) against the Portuguese colonial occupation in the central region of the country, seeking to highlight the impact of these struggles on the defense of Angola's territory. It is considered that the Portuguese's largest military campaign in African territories and specifically in Angola was against the Ovimbundu, in the last decade of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The results of the research (bibliographic and oral) show that these people fought two important wars against the Portuguese colonial occupation, the first of which took place from 1774 to 1778 and the second from 1890 to 1904.
